Lettuce can be a wonderful addition to any home garden. This leafy plant is actually easy to grow in a variety of climates. The secret to healthy, full heads of the vegetable can be attributed to proper lettuce watering.

Before you harvest this vegetable for your summer salads and autumn cookouts, the quest for perfect lettuce begins with watering. Here's a look at the most effective ways of watering lettuce in the garden or in containers.

Understanding the Water Needs of Lettuce

Anyone who has ever tasted a crisp, cold piece of lettuce should be able to understand that this vegetable requires a lot of water. As much as 96% of lettuce is water content.

Growing a vegetable that requires such a high concentration of water can be challenging. There are many things to consider. Climate, soil and many other factors play a role, but at the heart of all of your lettuce concerns is water.

Can you overwater lettuce? Of course. However, the chances of that happening are low unless you live in an area that is perpetually drenched by rainfall. Like with all other plants, growing lettuce requires diligence in watering. Your lettuce watering schedule is ultimately going to be a product of observation, experimentation and modification to obtain the best results.

Watering Lettuce in the Garden

There are surely advantages when planting lettuce outdoors. One of these is the occasional watering help that you'll receive from Mother Nature. You are still going to have to be observant, though, and take up the slack when things are dry.

Proper lettuce watering frequency outdoors is important. In most cases, lettuce needs to be watered thoroughly every day. Watering lettuce in garden settings requires you to address the shallow roots of the plant. Deep watering will be a waste of time and resources. You've got to keep those roots that are right under the surface moist.

In areas that receive a lot of sunlight and heat, lettuce will need to be watered more frequently. It is not uncommon to see the leaves of a lettuce plant wilt in the high heat, only to revive when you water again.

Watering Lettuce in Summer

It may seem ironic that cold, crisp lettuce is mostly grown by home gardeners in the summer. This means that you will have to take extra care with the watering requirements of the plant during those hot summer months.

A common trick is to use other, taller plants in your garden to provide a little shade for lettuce. Getting your plants out of direct sunlight, even for a few hours, can make a huge difference.

Remember, we mentioned those shallow roots. You should aim to keep the ground around your lettuce moist up to a depth of about two inches. This means watering every day and, in especially hot climates, it can mean watering more than once a day.

Watering Lettuce Indoors

Knowing how often you should be watering lettuce in containers is a different ballgame. In a container, the roots do tend to run a little bit deeper, so you should shoot for a three-inch depth of moisture in most setups.

You may also have to water less frequently because you are able to control certain variables like the heat and exposure to sunlight. Don't be fooled, though. Lettuce in any environment is going to require lots of water.

Watering Lettuce Seeds

If you are planting lettuce straight from seed, there are some specific watering requirements that you need to be aware of. In the early stages, it is very easy to water seedlings too much. This can prevent sprouting.

Place your lettuce seeds about one and a half to two inches below the soil. The soil covering the seeds should not be densely packed. Water every other day at the most. You could easily water twice a week when sprouting lettuce plants to increase your chances of healthy plants.

Once those seedlings have sprouted, they will start to amass size quickly. This is when you will shift to watering the lettuce every day for best results.

There is a general perception that lettuce can be hard to grow, but many home gardeners will tell you this is not the case. You just need to provide ample water for the leaves of the plant to develop that moisture that is so critical to good-tasting lettuce.
